Nancy Appleton Books exists to provide information about the common killers in our diet. SUGAR KILLS!
Nancy Appleton PhD started writing and lecturing about health in the late 1970s as a reaction to her own poor health. Her discoveries about sugar and other common diet mistakes led to her first book Lick the Sugar Habit, which is still chugging along as a 25-year bestseller. Eight more books followed. Her latest is Killer Colas. She also encapsulated her life’s work into the movie Sweet Suicide. She lived many years in a senior living community in San Diego hard at work writing her last incomplete book intended to build on her thesis for The Curse of Louis Pasteur, that 100 years of the dominant medical paradigm has almost as many failures as successes and robs people of agency over our own health. Nancy Appleton PhD passed away at the end of 2019. But, sugar is still bad for you…

Thanks, your books have been very informational.

HI Ms. Appleton,
I use your books on sugar and bones in my teaching at Bauman College. They are easy reads packed with excellent information.
If you have a reissue of LICK THE SUGAR HABIT in the works, you may wish to correct what appears to be a typo on page 179 wherein you suggest 50 milligrams of chromium. I believe it should be micrograms.
Hi
I was wondering if Dr. Appleton was aware of a product called Just Like Sugar http://www.justlikesugar.ca. It is made of orange peel, chicory root, calcium and vitamin C. It is recommended by Dr. Russel Blaylock.
I would be interested in any comments Dr. Appleton would have on this product.
Thank-you,
Bettina
PS I used this as I couldn’t find an email address.
Hello, Dr. Appleton,
As an abstinent member of Overaters Anonymous, I have wrestled with the question of the advisability of eating limited amounts of sugar in my food plan. I lost weight, my triglycerides and cholesterrol are lower and I like an occasional sweet of some kind. My OA sponsor says sugar is rat poison. Period. I see by your list that sugar is dangerous — but even in limited amounts?
Thank you,
David
Less refined sugar is better than a lot. None is better than less. How much you eat is up to you.
Great research on soft drinks .
My son who is 11 now has been drinking popular cola for a good 7 to 8 years . He gets migraines and these vomiting episodes . Doctor says it’s cycleatic vomiting syndrome and he will grow out of it. I took him to a psychologist and they said to cut out the cola and he hasn’t been sick since then . Can’t believe something as simple as that cured him .
Funny, I stopped eating sugar a few weeks ago and noticed my usually bad seasonal allergies went away. This is after I first switched to Whole food, no refined flour at all. Second, I went off Corn Syrup, I wouldn’t buy anything with either refined flour or corn syrup in it. Finally, a few weeks ago I cut out Sugar, and that did the trick.
The combination of cutting out all three works. I will add honey now and then in small quantities. I read that its natural complexity has shown that it helps the body maintain the proper blood sugar levels. Of course everything in moderation.
Throughout the gradual three steps above, I begun to reduce my portions as well. What I notice now is that I get full on one small serving. Here’s the kicker, I’m a 6’4″ large skeletal structured mail. But, I’ve never consistently felt this good. not even as a youth, in my early years, I was always tired. Not any more.
I just discovered your writings about sugar. Well, I hope its made required reading among kids. This is what they need to be teaching in schools.
i WILL APPRECIATE RESPONSIBLE LIVING SURPRISINGLY ENJOYABLE
I have read all three of Nancy Appleton book, Lick the sugar habits, Suicide by sugar and stopping inflamation, plus other books about sugars. And I notice that it helps a little bit. However what really makes the difference is not eating meat.
After I watch the Video Folk over Knife, everyting that I have learned finally make sense. I have not eat meat since March 2012 and have lost 8 pounds. And I still goes out to buffet and stuff myself like a pig but just avoid the meat items at the buffet, and still lost 8 lbs since March 2012.
Nancy books on Sugars makes sense. But what really makes a difference is the Video “Folk over Knife” about not eating meat.
George Foreman said to “Knock out the fat” with his George Foreman Grill. But by not eating meat, I knock out 100% of the fat in the meat plus all the other hormones, chemical and stuff that is in the meat these days.
I am not a vegan as I still eat fish once in a blue moon. But I do avoid the meat.
Our experience says that eliminating sugar is VASTLY MORE IMPORTANT than you choose to credit in your comments. In fact, our program has always been animal protein neutral: designed so that anyone can benefit, not just vegetarian/vegans. We are the first ones to say that many vegetarian/vegans lose the benefit of no meat by replacing protein calories with carbohydrate calories to feel full. This is not recommended, because carbs do not replace protein. Meat eaters are fully aware that animals are generally the most efficient means of including protein in a diet. Yes, there are vegetable sources of protein, but these typically have to be eaten in large quantities.
While we appreciate your opinion (hence not arbitrarily deleting it) and are glad that you are doing something that includes taking out sugar from your diet to get healthy, we do have to comment when such doctrinaire statements serve to misrepresent that our program is in fact animal protein neutral. We will have to agree to disagree here and wish each other well.
Thank you for your readership.

I would recommend everyone here read “Caffeine Blues: Wake Up to the Hidden Dangers of America’s #1 Drug” before looking for health solutions or cause from sugar, inflamation, minerals, Vitamins, Vegetarians, Co Enzyme Q10, Meditation to illicit the relaxation response, Etc.
In short, Caffeine cause stress & fight or flight response in the body. And continous fight or flight response in the body will result in all kind of damage to it, as the body does not care of the damages since it is more important to escape from the Lions or what ever predators at the moment, and the body does not know that the fight or fight response is cause by the drug Caffeine.
So before you look into all these health solution, look at the cause of your health problem of Caffeine. Otherwise you are just pouring water into a water container that has a hole leaking water at the bottom.
Everyone really needs to find F21. F21 is a delicious tasting tablet that is half the sweetness of sugar which helps block sugar absorption into the bloodstream..F21 has been formulated to help limit your blood sugar absorption and control further weight gain. For every gram of L-Arabinose, F21 blocks up to 20 grams of sugar (sucrose) by inhibiting the enzyme called sucrase.. Ingredients Google them PLEASE

I think that before we look at all these things Nancy Appleton are addressing, we should look at Mercury Poisoning as the possible cause first. As many of us have Silver/Amalgam dental fillings in our teeth, which is consisted of 50% Mercury. Go to this website http://www.amalgamillness.com/ and read about it. And if it arouse your interest, then buys books on this subject and read further.
My reading up on this subject of Amalgam dental filling mercury poisoning has give answer to many health concern that reading all the dozens of books, including Nancy Appleton books, I read earlier promise a solution to but does not resolve it.
I am fortunate that I am a health nut and takes many supplements that is suppose to be good for you, which I now know also helps deal with the effect of Mercury poisoning, and reduce the effect of Mercury poisoning over the years. But had I know about this 20 yrs ago, I could have remove the Silver/Amalgam filling in my teeth and solve the problem 20 yrs ago.
Please read up on Silver/Amalgam dental filling and it’s detrimental effect from Mercury being release from the dental filling into your body.
I found your website in searching for articles to show my husband on how detrimental sugar is to one’s health. In my 68 years, I have come to realize that I am a sugar addict. I have yo-yoed between eating sugar. I always feel better when I am not eating sugar and wheat products, but can get side tracked by not wanting to offend people. I have come to realize that not offending my body is more important than offending other people’s feelings because once I get a bite of sugary goodies, I can’t stop. At the height of my addiction I could eat an l-lb bag of M&M’s in one sitting. I have ordered the Three Weeks Value Pack and Sweet Suicide DVD with the hope that they will help make a difference in the lives of people I know and love. Thank you for making this information available. Agnes
I am reading Lick the Sugar Habit now. Are all of the facts still applicable now in 2014?
The information is still valid.

Dear Nancy, through another programme I have become aware of your so incredibly important work again…..we met, with Sue Deans from Jersey Island in India aeons ago…..I still counsel Mums on breastfeeding and will include some information when it seems appropriate . All the very best, Christina from Switzerland
Dear Nancy. I’m glad to see you have a blog here. You came and did some presentations for me here in the Napa Valley many years ago. I used your kits for checking body pH. Do you still have those? I’d love to reconnect. Would love to hear from you. God bless you. Loralyn from Napa
Yes, we still have kits. On our Store page. Four down from the top, I think. The doctor hopes you’ve been well in the interim.

Thank you for your information about sugar, I took the quiz & I truly need help with my sugar addiction. Mj
Wish the world would take note….NOW Sue Deans
Sugar addition is difficult to overcome. I know because I’ve had to face this challenge for all my life, but it became critical about 30 years ago. I have managed to stay sugar free for about 10 years. I know that I can’t eat sugar occasionally and be OK because that occasional eating triggers a non-stop binge until I am once again so sick I must stop. The hardest is not eating what others want me to eat, but I have learned that my health is more important than eating what they want me to eat. I am the only one who can control what I eat.

If you read any of the sugar or should I say anti-sugar classic books quite simply u never feel the same about it ever again!
A perfect time to remind us to give up sugar in 2016
Happy New Year
Christina
I just heard on the news that there was a scientific report that sugar was the cause of heart diseases, obesity and a bunch of other stuffs in the 60s. Then the sugar industry paid to have a study to shift the blame to fats and suppress the report on sugar. So it seems that this is old news that was suppress by the sugar industry. I said old news Nancy Appleton.
You are aware that Vitamin C is need for the body cellular repair. And Vitamin C can not be absorbed with sugar as sugar prevent the absorption of Vitamin C. Thus if you drink a glass of Orange Juice, none of the Vitamin C in a glass of Orange Juice is absorbed by your body due to the sugar content in the juice.
And if you eat a salad and all kind of vegetable goodies or if you are a vegan, but if you drink a glass of soda or sugary drink with your meal, then none of the Vitamin C in your meal is absorbed due to the sugary content in the drink.
And Ascorbic Acid is not the same as Vitamin C, as Ascorbic Acid is just the outer layer of Vitamin C. So if you are consuming lots of sugar, you are probably deficient in Vitamin C, even if you take Ascorbic Acid supplement.
Maybe you, a PHD, probably know this. But just thought I mention it.
The solution to your sugar problems is Trace Minerals. Even your book “Stopping Inflammation” stated that sugar causes imbalance in your minerals thus creates inflammations.
The truth is that with all the chemical process of agriculture that only add back Nitrogen, Potassium & phosphorus, our soils are missing the rest of the 72+ minerals that we need. So unless you eat organic foods that use organic gardening methods that replenish the soils with all the trace minerals, your veggies & fruits that you eat & your live stock eats are missing the 72+ minerals that you need. And you are what you eat.
But the solution is simple. If you are rich, then you can eat organic or pasture raise foods. But poor people can just get the Trace Mineral drops in the link below and add it back to their water, especially if they drink Reverse Osmosis water. And the soda sugar water that you drink are made from mineral depleted purified water. Even the sugar you use are processed with all the minerals that came with it removes, unless it is organic sugar.
The solution is in the link below. I just add it to my Reverse Osmosis water to bring it up to 50-100 ppm, since R.O. water is so pure that it is in the 5-20 ppm. And just as when you are so thirsty and dehydrated, it is recommend that you sip your water slowly until your body is used to the new intake of water. The same will happen when you take the water with the trace minerals, your body will react to it with an adverse reaction at first until it is used to it, since it has live it’s whole life depleted of trace mineral from eating all the process foods that has all the trace mineral removed.

Your solution is very similar to how western medicine operates, find a solution from outside the body to treat the problem and/or its symptoms. This process can ignore an original cause that the things we eat in our modern diet help cause the problems in the first place and the main culprit is sugar broadly defined as more than sucrose (table sugar) to include every other compound with an -ose ending, honey, agave and others.
So you’re allowed to believe that the sugar in our diets just needs to organic with the minerals left in. We will always reply with the same short list of rebuttals…
A) we eat too much sugar variously citing a range between 100-150lbs per year of sugar and other sweeteners per American consumed in the year studied.
B) That in an evolutionary sense considering this sugar overload it is the sugar itself that overwhelms a body system to cause our health problems because evolution works slowly and most bodies are still in a state of preferring an older hunter-gather diet in which sugar in the form of whole fruit was far more rare.
C) That one mechanism how sugar affects the body and its minerals is that it changes the pH of the body well out of the norm and that to deal with this change the body pulls minerals from the tissues (including calcium from bones) to change the body back to the preferred equilibrium or homeostasis. And then these excess minerals are excreted. And there are many other similar processes that serve to make the minerals that are in our bodies and food system completely unusable, so you just can’t take a pill or drops to solve the problem when stopping the underlying cause is also necessary.
D) Organic food has its place, but to assume that eating organic food, putting trace mineral drops in reverse osmosis water or anything else sold as an easy solution without also concurrently making the real effort to eat a little less sugar than last year will, to us, never do enough good because too much sugar is always too much sugar, even when processed to have an organic label.
And we’ll let the Amazon link slide because you did have a real opinion to present.
Any thing in excess is bad.
And yes, trace minerals is just one solution to the deplete soils of trace minerals and deplete trace minerals in process food. And even with Trace Minerals, there is the camp that said that it must be from plant source trace minerals and the other say that salt base trace minerals is acceptable. But the point is that trace minerals are missing and we need it. Just as the trace mineral Chromium is needed for sugar metabolism.
Sugar is bad in another way in that it help proliferate bad microbes in the body and pull calcium out of the body. But there is a solution to that part of Sugar detrimental effect. And that is Xylitol. Xylitol will help rebuild teeth and bones. And it also help fight the effect of bad bacteria in the intestine by destroying the biofilm and kiling the bad microbes. That is why people have diarrhea when they eat too much Xylitol at first. All the biofilm in the intestine got disrupted too fast and just flush out as diarrhea. So if you have a balance of Xylitol & sugar the Xylitol will also counter the effect of sugar. And again, anything in excess is bad, including Xylitol.
All these problems can be solve with a balance diets. Unfortunately, all the food we have are processed and out of balance due to missing nutrients from the food processing, and that include sugar as it is process food. If you watch those documentaries about people who live in their old native traditional diets have no modern diseases. Then when they move to the city and eat the western food, which is process foods, they start to have all the modern diseases.
I can’t escape from eating the western diets so I just try to replenish what is missing from the western process foods with trace mineral drops, since I have reverse osmosis water that remove all the mineral from the water. And my R.O, system is so good that it only have 6 ppm, where as the R.O. water from those water stores have 20 ppm. Recommended PPM for water is 50-100 ppm. Any less will leach minerals from the body. Any more will cause mineral build up.
Do you still sell the body chemistry test kit? If so can I have ordering information please. Thank you
Yes we do. Unless something has recently happened to the PayPal links in the item listing on the store page, that is the easiest way to order. Remember to choose the link that reflects where your package is going, domestic US, Canada or the rest of the world. And if you absolutely don’t like dealing with PayPal, you may send a check or money order for the same amount to Nancy Appleton Books, 5950 Buckingham Parkway #606, Culver City, CA 90230. Thank you.
I finally find a solution to the sugar problem. It is almost impossible to have a drink with your meal without sugar. And drinking water by itself is just impossible. But I finally find this water enhancing drops that allow you to drink water without any sugar in it. Of course this is only one example, as there are many other water enhancing drops available for sales. I think I will finally be able to lick the sugar habit with these water enhancing drop. Keeping my finger cross.
This post is borderline for the editorial staff (me) pulling a peremptory delete. This site has been extremely picky about the use of these comment boxes for commercial links, since forever.
As for the comment itself, the only substances deemed worse than Doctor Appleton’s opinion on various artificial sweeteners (limited support for Stevia, nothing else) is her opinion on actual refined sugar. Sugar-free water enhancing drops automatically means artificial sweeteners.
Additionally, the staff and the rest of the doctor’s surviving family are aware of another relative with a presently horrible diet, lots of caffeine, artificial sweeteners and several food dyes that many nutrition practitioners, not just the doctor, suggest to watch out for having mental health problems. Part of the diet that concerns us includes water enhancing drops, which includes the artificial sweeteners and colors. The too much caffeine comes from energy drinks.
The path to mental illness in this case isn’t fully clear yet. But, the doctor’s assertion was always many illnesses are related to biochemical imbalances either directly caused by a bad diet or simply exacerbated by said bad diet. She also acknowledged a wide range of individual responses. Some are more sensitive to artificial sweeteners and colors than others. And yes, water tastes better…at the cost of subtle health risks that could show up later.
So because the post is borderline, it goes forward without the link. Essentially, the staff and commenter will have to agree to disagree.
This product I am using has Sucralose. It also goes by the name Splenda. I will keep in mind about what kind of sweetener the water enhancers use. I will do more research on splenda/sucralose, but it seems to be not so bad. Otherwise I will look for water enhancer with sweetener such as Xylitol or Erythritol. Not all sugar substitute is bad in my opinion. But It is very hard for me to drink water by itself with a meal. But I can drink water by itself without a meal.
To make water more tasty, you can put a bottle full in the fridge for a couple of hours, add slices of lemon, fresh ginger, cucumber, watermelon, fresh mint leaves, etc etc etc , cheers
