Frequently Asked Questions
In order to streamline things here are the answers to most of the common questions and requests that we get.
1. How does the program work? – I recommend that you read the Allergies and Disease page before reading this page. For more in depth information about homeostasis, allergies and disease, please refer to one of the doctor’s books.
2. Do I still have to exercise on the program? – YES!
3. I’m a vegetarian/vegan or I’m currently on some other diet plan from someone else, can I eat on your plans? – Yes, assuming the other books you’ve read aren’t snake oil. If that other book says anything like “sugar is good for you” or “mountains of carbs are good for you” then you’re reading snake oil and you have to choose between us or them. However, most responsible diet books are about less sugar, less fried foods, less additives and more vegetables (some prefer raw) and all of these other plans are encompassed by our three food plans. Blood Type Diet: sure we got your back. Metabolic Type Diet: ditto. Raw Diet: sure (you can do it, but in mean moments we take bets on how long it lasts). South Beach: absolutely. Atkins: the doctor really liked this one. And so it goes. As for the vegetarian/vegans among us, the doctor is not nor has ever been a vegetarian and neither is the majority of America. However, other than to gently state that it is not animal proteins per se, but what we eat that protein with that causes our problems, the doctor takes no other public position on the subject. Food Plan Three also has beans and whole grains on it (in proper amounts) and a vegetarian/vegan can and should eat these in place of animal protein if they so choose. All food plans can be modified to suit individual circumstances. However, the doctor cautions vegetarians/vegans about replacing the calories from animal protein with honey, too much bread, or whatnot, because sugar, sweeteners and too much carbohydrates are NOT a substitute for protein.
4. Does Dr. Appleton see patients? – No, it wouldn’t be semi-retirement if she did.
5. Help! I have X symptoms and need advice. – The doctor’s books and the Allergies and Disease page cover most of the common things that kill us, but every now and then a set of symptoms comes up that the doctor hasn’t specifically studied. We answer those emails about things not covered in the books. However, in thirty years of nutritional practice a great majority of people who actually applied the program got better regardless of symptoms. So, now that she has retired and doesn’t want to see patients, her only intelligent advice to those who have emailed has been READ A BOOK, USE A BODY MONITOR TEST KIT and GO ON ONE OF THE FOOD PLANS IN THE BACK OF ANY OF HER BOOKS. Also, we can’t directly give medical advice because neither the doctor nor present management has an MD after our names, so it would be illegal. We give general nutrition advice which more often than not helps with your symptoms. It’s an interesting distinction that keeps the medical lobby very far away. Always consult your doctor or other health professional.
6. Help! I’m dealing with a blockhead doctor who is hostile to nutrition and need a referral. – We don’t as a rule refer patients. Many doctors still believe the science paid for by Big Sugar and react like a small child eating spinach. In the answer above, we told you to consult your health professional, but that doesn’t mean you can’t shop around for a doctor that understands something about nutrition. We have provided links to at least three organizations, Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation, International Foundation for Nutrition and Health, and Cancer Control Society, that make holistic health practioner referrals a part of their business model. If these links can’t help then there is always Google.
7. If you’re not that into giving very much individual advice, for what sorts of things should I use your email address? – Well, if you have a shipping problem, I definately want to hear about it. The doctor is a sucker for success stories and testimonials so I will forward these emails. She is also on the lookout for any new research in the health field. And of course, there are a variety of mundane business things to deal with: permissions, wholesale pricing, interview requests etc.
8. Do you reciprocate links? – Yes and No. We have a article/fact sheet titled 141 Reasons Why Sugar is Ruining Your Health that we request a link back to this site when others want to post it on their site, but this type of link is one way. However, now that we are nearly done combining our Internet presence on this blog, we want to hear from any health bloggers, and health organizations with a similar message and we can share eyeballs now.
9. I have a website and want to post the 141 Reasons Why Sugar is Ruining Your Health fact sheet. – The answer is Yes if you properly credit Nancy Appleton PhD and provide a link back to this site (see Answer #8 above) http://www.nancyappleton.com. I request that you email me first so that you may explain the context in which you intend to use this information.
10. How does the Body Monitor Test Kit work? – Dr. Appleton found that the Sulkowitz Reagent reacts with calcium in the urine. Seven drops of each in a test tube will show if you’re in a state of homeostasis, because the solution will either be cloudy (too much calcium in the urine), slightly hazy (normal), or clear (too little calcium). Any result that is not normal means you are out of homeostasis and need corrective action. We also provide a pH paper to test the acid-alkaline state of both saliva and urine. Any of the doctor’s books and the instructions to the test kit will provide more complete information.
11. I want to quote and/or cite Dr. Appleton’s work in my own work. – The answer is yes, as long as you email me first and explain the context for which you wish to use the quote and that you follow prevailing rules of Fair Usage and credit Dr. Appleton properly. As for scientific citations, the answer is always yes because that’s the purpose of citations – the doctor cites Walter B. Cannon and plenty of other pure researchers who couldn’t write an interesting sentence with a gun to their heads. If you need to cite her, go ahead just let us know as said above. However, nothing is stopping you from looking up the articles that we cite and putting your work together that way. Either way citations are about peer review and full dissemination of knowledge.
12. Payment and shipping – We ship anywhere civilized. We are in the process of combining the old website and this blog. If you use the old website’s store page don’t use the pay buttons if you live abroad. Email us at nancyappletonbooks@yahoo.com for an invoice. If you are ordering from this blog, we are eliminating the buttons entirely in favor of invoices. Email your order to nancyappletonbooks@yahoo.com or use any of the comment boxes on the blog. See the Contact Us & Site Instructions page for more information.
13. What are your wholesale policies? – Ten or more items at any one time (Three Weeks to a Healthier You counts as one item) earns a 40% discount. DO NOT CLICK ANY BUTTONS ON THE STORE PAGE! The store is retail only. You must email me at nancyappletonbooks@yahoo.com with your order at which time I will send you a money request from Paypal, or I will send you a paper invoice to your snailmail address so that you may send a check made out to Nancy Appleton for the amount. With very few exceptions, I don’t send ahead of payment, so pay the invoice and see the products on your doorstep as soon as the PO will allow.
14. How do you ship? – United States Post Service. The other guys are too expensive and so we make the best compromise between cheap and getting it there before the next Ice Age. We send Media Mail, Priority Mail, Air Mail, Parcel Post (US only), or First Class Mail as appropriate.
15. Do you give refunds? Yes. We need the products sent back to the PO Box listed on the contact page in resellable condition. Those that paid with Paypal will have their refunds processed with Paypal. Those in the US that paid with a check will get a check back in the mail.
16. I want to interview the doctor. – Email me and I will forward your request. I only ship and sell her books. The doctor takes care of her schedule.
17. I don’t like Paypal, but still want to pay by credit card. – I am only able to process credit card online through Paypal. If it’s a matter of security, Paypal is the most vigorously defended site on the whole internet. If you still don’t like them then, you need to send a check or money order to the PO Box listed on the contact page. This check or money order should be made out to Nancy Appleton with the total including shipping. There are no exceptions to this as I will not be responsible for securing your credit card information.
18. What sweeteners do you recommend? – Almost none, except whole fruits, other whole foods and Stevia (some of the time). Stevia, from the bark of a South American tree, seems to have the least effect on body chemistry of any sweeteners studied by Doctor Appleton. However, least does not mean none. A healthy person who is going on the program ahead of symptoms and who is in a state where sugar insults are well handled with quick returns to homestasis will do OK using Stevia. An ill person or one who is actively sugar addicted (currently consuming sugar and losing control) will not do well on Stevia. They must detox and heal for however long that takes before switching to Stevia (everyone is different).
Hello Dr. Nancy Appleton,
Thank you for your Tele-Class on Lick The Sugar Habit..
I have called Pedi-Sure about not only the sugar content, but the soy content.
I didn’t get too far about the 2 ingredients. I was
furious. My grandson has ADHD. His parents give this product to him because he doesn’t eat very good and eats a lot of sugar.
Thank you again.
Sincerely,
June

Hello! I really enjoyed to your book. Suicide by Sugar. I just had one question. When you talk about fructose are you talking about the fruit fructose or just the processed stuff or maybe both?
Thanks
